The tray itself is completely waterproof and contains the sand, however the lid doesn't seal tightly, so the tray shouldn't be tilted when filled with sand. **Q: Do I need to buy extra sand or does it come with enough?** A: Hi. It comes with enough but with continued use, you may need to refill later. It has 5 lbs of Sandtastik® therapy sand included. Thanks! **Q: What are the dimensions of this item?** A: Hi Becky. The tray measures 14 5⁄8" x 10 1⁄4" x 3 3⁄8" and the sand and all miniatures fit within. This kit is designed to be a smaller, lighter weight set for portability. If portability is not a concern, our Premium Starter Full Package would be better suited: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MAYM5ZM **Q: What kind of sand comes with the set?** A: Hello. It comes with 5 lbs of Sandtastik® coarse therapy sand.
