Champagne Laurent-Perrier was founded in 1812 but the story is really one of modern renaissance. In 1939 Eugenie Laurent sold the House to the de Nonancourt family and in 1948 Madame de Nonancourt passed control of the House to her son Bernard. Full of energy and ideas, Bernard was unafraid to challenge convention and had a modern vision of a champagne style that was lighter on the palate and could be enjoyed any time. He brought innovation and a pioneering spirit to the House, and so the Laurent-Perrier style of elegance and freshness was born. His legacy lives on through his daughters who manage the House today. In the 1950s Bernard de Nonancourt crafted a new type of champagne, going beyond vintages in search of this perfection. Drawing on his long experience of vintage years in Champagne, Bernard observed that there were years of exceptional freshness, years where finesse predominated and other years when wines were much more structured. So, contrary to everything being done in Champagne, he decided to create a prestige cuvee that was not a single vintage but instead used several vintages, each with excellent but different characteristics. In effect, blending the best with the best to obtain the best. In appearance, Grand Siècle is a lustrous gold with a very delicate bead of fine bubbles. The nose has notes of fresh brioche, citrus fruits and hints of honey. The taste is round and long, with a silky, generous mouthfeel. The lasting sensation is one of freshness and a powerful persistent finish that is exquisitely fine and elegant. Grand Siècle pairs with the most refined dishes, particularly seafood and noble fish such as turbot.
